2022–2024 Immigration Levels Plan
On February 14, 2022, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Sean Fraser released information on the 2022–2024 Immigration Levels Plan. The new development will focus on economic recovery and the gaps in the labour market.
Why is Immigration important?
Immigration is important to the Canadian economy and job market, especially during the pandemic. The majority of the labour growth in Canada is contributed through immigration. Newcomers have worked on the front lines to help support the country and fill labour vacancies. However, there are still many jobs in the labour market across all industries waiting to be filled. In addition, newcomers brings more diversity to the country that is presently recognized as a cultural mosaic. It is clear that immigration plays a major role in Canada’s success, which is why increasing immigration is important.
What is the 2022–2024 Immigration Levels Plan?
Canada has recently announced their plans to improve clients’ experiences by modernizing their immigration system. Some latest changes include digitalizing applications and reducing the application processing times. The 2022–2024 Immigration Levels Plan hopes to bring new entrant’s equal to 1% of Canada’s population each year. The plan will help retain and welcome new entrants into the areas experiencing financial and labour shortages. There will be more of a focus on welcoming those from the economic class. It will also help to welcome more French-speaking newcomers to all provinces excluding Quebec by the next year.
Additionally, the plan highlights providing a safe place for those attempting to apply under humanitarian based immigration. As of today, almost 7,550 Afghan refugees have built a home within Canada. By 2024, Canada hopes to welcome a minimum of 40,000 refugees from Afghanistan.
Moving Forward
Canada continues to work and make changes to create a transparent and reliable immigration system. This plan will help post-pandemic Canada boost immigration in the coming years. Going forward Canada will continue to be place where new entrants can build a new life and prosper.
