This began an accretion of provinces and territories and a process of increasing autonomy, culminating in the Canada Act of 1982.

Canada is a federal state governed as a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. The country is officially bilingual and multicultural at the federal level, with a population of approximately 37.9 million as of 2021. Canada’s advanced economy is one of the largest in the world, relying chiefly upon its abundant natural resources and well-developed trade networks, especially with the United States, with which it has had a long and complex relationship.

Canada is known for having many lakes, with around 3 million lakes and rivers. The Five Great Lakes are Lake Huron, Superior, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario. These lakes are a major part of the physical and cultural heritage of Canada. More than half of the population live in the province of Ontario and Quebec. The most urban places are Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa. Popular tourist destinations are Niagara Falls, CN Tower, Banff National Park, Ottawa’s Parliament Hill, and Old Quebec. Toronto and Montreal — have been recognized as world-class cities in which to live and work for their cleanliness and safety, and for their cultural activities and attractive lifestyles.

The province of Alberta is the leader of production and natural gas in Canada. Saskatchewan is the main agricultural province in Canada, and farmers grow around 45% of Canada’s grains, like wheat, canola, flax, and rye.

With a 99% literacy rate, it is proven that Canadians place great importance on learning and have developed a first-rate education system with high standards. The country spends more on education (as a percentage of GDP) compared to the OECD average and is the second highest among G-8 countries. The education system is divided into categories based on age. By law, it is mandatory for children to stay in school until the age of 16.
